About one-fifth (20%) of the world’s population, or over one billion people, speaks some variety of Chinese as their native language.There are upto thirteen main regional groups but the most spoken, by far, is Mandarin (about 850 million), followed by Wu (90 million), Cantonese (Yue) (70 million) and Min (50 million). Most of these groups are mutually unintelligible.

However, Standard Chinese has emerged from the Mandarin dialect of Beijing and is now widely used througout China, Taiwan, Singapore, not to mention being one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Notwithstanding, Cantonese, which originates from Guangzhou in southern China, is the dialect of Chinese spoken in Hong Kong and Macau and which is most widely spoken in Chinese communities around the world - Australia, Canada, Panama, Peru, the United States, throughout Europe and Southeast Asia. Effectively, Cantonese is the Chinese 'lingua franca' outside of mainland China due to the British, Portuguese and other trading interests in southern China and the fact that it is from this region that most Chinese emigrated.

Please note that Mandarin and Cantonese are mutually unitelligible largely because of pronunciation differences.
